This past Sunday I had the pleasure of joining John and Sarah Mester and the youth group of St Barnabas for TACO NIGHT! (It was messy and DELICIOUS!) It was nice to see some familiar faces and I learned a few things. For example, did you know Corbin Blue (of High School Musical Fame) is playing Usnavi (a lead role in In the Heights) on Broadway??!! He is. I also learned that you can actually get an acoustic electric violin in smurf blue. And I learned that you should pay attention at Chipotle and Moe's when they roll your burritos - it takes mad skill and it's the only way to go when your taco meat is extra liquid-y!! :)
All kidding aside - this youth group reminded me of some important lessons I think we sometimes forget in regular church life. I was new... most of the students had never met me before. 1) The introduced themselves to me, and helped me remember each other's names. 2) One student in particular SAT NEXT TO ME. 3) They asked me questions - like, So how do you know those students? What do you do? Why do you know so much about this topic? And then 4) while I was helping to clean up - a student asked me if I'd be back next week.
You can't be much more welcoming than that. And this is just another reason I LOVE WORKING WITH YOUTH!!!
